TRACKING THE LIFECYCLE OF HIPSTER FASHION

Dig Emily Miethner's colorful infograph of the 'Lifecycle of Hipster Fashion', but be forewarned, her 'circle of life' may hit too close to home for a few of you out there, you know who you are...plaid shirt, cut-off jean shorts, Keds Champion sneakers, a beard or handlebar mustache & a bikers cap.
I'll be fair, I'm not hatin' on Hipster fashion because it's just that, fashion, and when something or someone becomes in fashion or dresses in fashion, it's much easier for others with the same likes and desires to 'cluster' together...strength in numbers, one might say.

–noun [fash-uh n]
1. a prevailing custom or style of dress, socializing, etc: "latest fashion in dresses."
2. conventional in dress, etc., esp. of polite society, or conformity to. it:

DELILAH'S TRIKE for BESPOKE: THE HANDBUILT BICYCLE

Portland, Oregon must be 'proud as a new parent' with the exceptional workmanship that master bike builder Sacha White of Vanilla Bicycles produces. Not only does Sacha create & build top of the line performance 2-wheelers, he has hands down, the single most kick-ass trike you have ever seen. EVER! No joke! Check out those rear wheels...I can not get enough of those custom built Phil Wood's (built by Phil Wood for Delilah).
Feast your eyes on Delilah's Trike. What I wouldn't give to be a wee little toddler, again.
Sacha is also currently exhibiting in the Museum of Arts and Design's Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle, through August 15th.

RETRO-FIT THAT iPAD WITH A USB TYPEWRITER

"The USBTypewriter is a new and groundbreaking innovation in the field of obsolescence. Lovers of the look, feel, and quality of old fashioned manual typewriters can now use them as keyboards for any USB-capable computer, such as a PC, Mac, or even iPad! The modification is easy to install, it involves no messy wiring, and does not change the outward appearance of the typewriter (except for the usb adapter itself, which is mounted in the rear of the machine). So the end result is a retro-style USB keyboard that not only looks great, but feels great to use..."

THE GLIDE BIKE by MICHAEL SHREWSBURY

What looks like it's straight out of Tron is industrial designer, Michael Shrewsbury's "The Glide" bicycle.

"Breaking from the monotony of traditional bicycle shape, designer Michael Shrewsbury has come up with a track bike concept by the name “The Glide” that features a frame made in nano carbon. Moving on hubless wheels that ride along a channel in the frame against sealed bearings, the track bike includes an internal crank set to save your clothes from rolling in the chain. In addition, the belt drive turns a cog mounted in the rear of the bike that meshes with the rear wheel causing it to turn and give you forward or reverse motion..." www.thedesignblog.org

JUSTIN QUINNELL: 6 MONTHS OF PINHOLE PHOTOGRAHPY

Justin Quinnell must have the patience of a Saint. He assembled & installed a number of handmade pinhole cameras around Bristol, leaving them untouched for 6 months, yes, 6 months. His project was to record views of Bristol, UK, with the sun trailing across the sky during the Winter Solstice (December 22nd) thru the Summer Solstice (June 2oth).

To better understand the picture below (Clifton Suspension Bridge. Bristol, UK. Dec 17, 2007-June 21, 2008), the wavy light streaks seen are that of the sun...the lowest streak shows the suns path of the Winter Solstice, while the highest streak shows the suns path of the Summer Solstice.

H by HARRIS: FIXIE FASHION

UK designer Harris Elliott asked film maker Manny Bonett to create this film short for Harris' new H by Harris line, an accessories line built around the 'fixed gear' culture. Bonett's "Fixed" short litereraly sets things on fire...and what's sexier than a gaggle of freestylin' UK hipster-fixie-gearheads with flares, in a Jesus Christ pose?

ROY VILLALOBOS for ¡ALTO ARIZONA!

While walking down Pilsen's 18th Street (Chicago), I peeped in a shop window & saw a poster by local artist Roy Villalobos...with its strong, 3-color, stencilized graphic in protest of Arizona's SB1070.

Check out more from ¡Alto Arizona! and their art/poster campaign HERE.

A CHUD CONVENTION: A SKINNY PUPPY & a;GRUMH COLLAB (1987)

Long before mall-chains like 'hot topic' homogenized the Goth, Industrial & Ambient/ Noise music movements, there were those of us that liked to lock ourselves in dark rooms, smear on some eyeliner and crank up some really fucked up tunes...Skinny Puppy, one of them.

I bought this 12" single in 1987 from Jelly's in Honolulu , Hawaii. They specialized in new & used vinyl and had the sickest import collection. The sickest. It was the late 80s. Cds were just creeping into the music industry, the internet was still almost unavailable to most of us & we relied on rags like NME to tell us what was happening in the music world around the globe...and what the fuck was a YouTube?! I was crazy about Skinny Puppy, Chanting Mongolian Monks & a printmaker by the name Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) and along comes A Chud Convention. I wept.

A Chud Convention (Circle Records) was an experimental ambient/ noise collaboration between members of Skinny Puppy (cEvin Key & Nivek Ogre) & a;GRUMH (SΔ3 Evets & JΔ3 Seuqcaj)...sadly, they only released one record, titled 'Sorrow'.

HEO JEONG IM...ENTER THE COFFEE STICK

Designer Heo Jeong Im has just introduced the Coffee Stick. Now, the deal with his creation is hot, fresh brewed coffee on-the-go. How's it work? Just grab your cup of hot water, drop your stick in, a few turns of the wrist and wham-o, coffee. Choose from Cafe Latte, Cappuccino, Caramel Machiato, Mocha Latte & Americano flavours.

I think that this is a good looking 'design concept', but not all concepts need be produced and the downside certainly is a downer.

Let's look at some of the negatives, shall we:
-a horrible waste of resources...what's the landfill life of the stick?
-why not create something somewhat re-usable, say, a spoon for my yogurt instead of the bulbous stirrer?
-at a glance, it looks more like a pregnancy test...should I pee on the stirrer before or after I mix my coffee?
-the only things I enjoy on a stick are lollipops & corn dogs.
-if you really need your 'coffee on the go" wouldn't you rather toss a hand-full of Starbucks' Via's in your pocket or bag? After all, size matters and Heo's stir-stick is flippin' huge!
