I paid a visit to the Art Chicago/ Next Art Fair 2011exhibition. Waded through miles of mediocre & un-inspirational art. Many of the booths were manned by guys in navy blue suits & loafers who looked like they worked weekends at their local Hummer dealership [or at least, controlled shares in a Hummer dealership]. Eavesdropped on a number of conversations the circled around "I'm working with this client", second homes & over-indulgent steak dinners.
There were few saving graces, that is until I stumbled across the ADA Gallery space, which hosted the works of James Trotter. John Pollard [ADA co-director] was unhand. Unlike the 'blue-suits', he was extremely engaging and 'hand on my heart' bares an uncanny resemblance to Dayton Ohio rock legend Bob Pollard of Guided by Voices.

Chris Silas Neal

Chris Silas Neal's work is a nice little retreat from the overworked and super polished digital world. He's a Brooklyn based artist & instructor at the Pratt Institute, whose illustrations and hand-drawn type are reminiscent of styles and aesthetics of early last century. It is seriously refreshing to see that there are still artists who take the time to lay it out by hand, who don't settle on programs & nanobots to write their art for them...'cause brother, this fella likes it old school!

Ben Javens is an illustrator from across the pond (England), whose flair for great design precedes him. I've been a fan of Ben's 60's Danish stylized graphics for a wee bit. Needless to say, I grinned like a little girl while shopping at my neighborhood Target store here, in Chicago & spied a row of 8th Continent Soymilk containers from yours truly, Ben.

Joey D is a Chicago based artist, illustrator, animator and all-around madman. His artwork is off-the-freakin-chain!
