THE VISUAL LANGUAGE of HERBERT MATTER
This flick is currently touring the indie film festival circuit, cross your fingers and maybe it'll land in yours. The DVD will be released shortly after the tour.
"THE VISUAL LANGUAGE OF HERBERT MATTER is a revealing look at the fascinating life story of the highly influential mid-century modern design master. Known as a quintessential designer's designer, Swiss born Herbert Matter is largely credited with expanding the use of photography as a design tool and bringing the semantics of fine art into the realm of applied arts.
Inspired by Russian constructivists and taught by artists such as Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, and A.M.Cassandre in Paris in the late 20s, Matter designed a series of cutting-edge Swiss travel posters that won international acclaim for the pioneering use of photo-montage combined with type. Always striking a balance between fine art projects and commercial work, the taciturn designer found his own unique language, which resulted in the creation of such iconic works as the corporate identity for Knoll Associates and the New Haven Railroad. With his photography he was adept in documenting the early furniture of Charles and Ray Eames and creating covers for Vogue and Arts & Architecture as well as documenting his contemporaries Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning or Alberto Giacometti. As a filmmaker, he directed a critically acclaimed film "Works of Calder" about his good friend Alexander Calder, with music composed by John Cage. Later in life he was a professor for photography and graphic design among Paul Rand and Josef Albers at Yale University..."

THE ART INSTITUTE of CHICAGO presents HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON
The Art Institute of Chicago will be exhibiting selected works (nearly 300 photographs, over 3 decades of works) of one of the most important photographers of all time, Henri Cartier-Bresson. The Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century exhibition runs from July 25th-October 3rd.
"Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) is one of the most original, accomplished, and influential figures in the history of photography. His celebrated work of the early 1930s helped to define the artistic potential of modern photography; a decade later, after surviving three years as a prisoner of war, Cartier-Bresson emerged from World War II determined to document a world in the midst of profound change. He did so in 1947 when he joined Robert Capa and others to found the Magnum photo agency, an organization that allowed photojournalists to reach broad audiences through such publications as Life and Paris Match, while still retaining independence and control over their work..."

JUSTIN QUINNELL: 6 MONTHS OF PINHOLE PHOTOGRAHPY
Justin Quinnell must have the patience of a Saint. He assembled & installed a number of handmade pinhole cameras around Bristol, leaving them untouched for 6 months, yes, 6 months. His project was to record views of Bristol, UK, with the sun trailing across the sky during the Winter Solstice (December 22nd) thru the Summer Solstice (June 2oth).
To better understand the picture below (Clifton Suspension Bridge. Bristol, UK. Dec 17, 2007-June 21, 2008), the wavy light streaks seen are that of the sun...the lowest streak shows the suns path of the Winter Solstice, while the highest streak shows the suns path of the Summer Solstice.

How To: DIY $10 Macro Light Tent
Jen's blog 'Picture Today' has an awesome DIY light tent...excellent for those indoor, close-up photos. She shows you how easy it is to make a light tent for under $10. Thanks to her tutorial, I just completed mine for free (I had all of the supplies & didn't need to purchase any). It's mad simple and it sure beats paying the 60+ bucks & having to deal with those butt-heads over at B&H.

DOUG KEYES X BERND BECHER 'WATER TOWERS'
I'm all about water towers and I love-love black and white photography, no matter what the subject matter (generally)...just as long as it stops me long enough to take a '2nd look'. Doug Keyes is a photographer that's got my attention and what do you think I found on his site? A photo of a Bernd Becher water tower...amazing!

I made another trip to Golden Age tonight (my new fave indie shop in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood) to grab myself a copy of 'X'. The shop is floor to ceiling 'zines, music, artwork and more.
The Golden Age staff? They're mad-cool! Not like those record shop pricks, in neighborhood near you, with their "yeah man, I used to dig German-Prog-Rock, that was before it got popular, man!"
